In 1978, Jim Holloran, family man and local attorney, opened a small bar at the corner of Russell Boulevard and 12th Street in St. Louis, Missouri. Then John D. McGurk’s was just one small room with a bar, a few pub tables, and a stage. Needless to say, McGurk’s has grown in both size and notoriety over the years, but the Holloran family remains the proud owners. John McAteer, better known to the regulars as “Lucky,” tends the front bar of McGurk’s Tuesday thru Saturday. Lucky hails from Donegal, but 15 years ago emigrated from his home to St. Louis where he took a job as a dishwasher at an up-and-coming Irish restaurant and bar in Soulard.

Since then, McGurk’s has become the standard of Irish establishments in the United States, and Lucky has become a fixture at the front bar. His knowledge, experience, and charm have been essential to McGurk’s success, and the McGurk’s family thanks him greatly for his decade and a half of proud service.
